MIDI playback guide

Why does MIDI sound different from my DAW?

Compare local MIDI playback and a real server render. Understand SoundFonts, program changes, controllers and the limits of MIDI audio conversion.

MIDI describes a performance, not the original recording chain. Another synthesizer can play the same notes with different samples, envelopes and effects. Exporting WAV instead of MP3 does not restore the missing instruments.

Try a controlled comparison

  1. Download the original keys, bass and drums MIDI.
  2. Open it in the MIDI Player, press Play and listen at normal speed.
  3. Listen to the server-renderer output below. Use similar listening volume when comparing timbre.

Download the rendered MP3. The original sequence contains 68 notes across electric piano, bass and percussion parts, plus a timing track. The audio was produced by the server renderer running locally in Docker; the record includes its code and SoundFont hashes.

What to listen for

Compare piano attack, bass sustain, drum balance and the tail after the final note. The browser and server use different synthesis engines. This exercise helps you hear the difference; it does not promise an identical mix or claim one render is always better.

Check the MIDI before blaming the audio format

Use the Analyzer & Inspector to check note counts, channels and detected programs. The displayed program is a summary, not every instrument change. General MIDI channel 10 is used for drums. A DAW export with missing programs may select a different instrument on another player.

MIDI can carry controllers, but applications differ in how they interpret them. The note durations shown by the Analyzer describe paired note events; they do not measure every audible sustain or effect tail.

When you need the original DAW sound

Render audio from the original project with its instruments and effects available. Our WAV converter supplies a fixed General MIDI rendering, not custom plug-in hosting or SoundFont upload. Local preview is free; exporting your MIDI on the server costs 1 Credit.
