MIDI to WAV vs MP3
Compare actual WAV and MP3 renders of the same original MIDI. See file sizes, encoding differences, and which format suits editing or sharing.
Last updated September 6, 2026Choose WAV when you will edit the rendered audio. Choose MP3 for a smaller listening or sharing copy. Both first require a synthesizer to turn MIDI instructions into sound.
Compare the same original performance
These files use our original piano study, the same server renderer code and FluidR3Mono GM SoundFont, executed locally in Docker. They are actual renderer outputs, not cloud transactions and not a preview of your file.
- WAV: 1,841,964 bytes; 44.1 kHz, 16-bit stereo PCM; 10.442 seconds.
- MP3: 420,093 bytes; 44.1 kHz stereo at 320 kbps; 10.475 seconds.
The encoded files have slightly different durations. Compare the musical notes rather than assuming that container duration must be identical.
Uncompressed WAV
Compressed MP3
What uncompressed does—and does not—mean
WAV preserves the PCM output of this render without MP3 encoding loss. It does not recover proprietary samples, plug-ins or effects from your original DAW. Both examples use the same GM instrument source, so format alone does not upgrade the instrument.
Export your own file
- Open the converter for your chosen format.
- Select the MIDI and inspect it locally. Listen to the local preview if useful.
- Sign in and confirm the format before starting the 1 Credit cloud export.
- Download within 24 hours. Keep the source MIDI if you may change instruments or notes later.
Local playback and the server can sound different. For that distinction, see why MIDI sounds different from a DAW. Sample provenance: WAV render record and MP3 render record.
