These examples were held out until the note filter was fixed. A match requires the same pitch and an onset within 100 ms. They demonstrate two specific files; they are not a claim that every piano, guitar, or song reaches the same score.

Generated 2026-09-07 with Spotify Basic Pitch TypeScript 1.0.1 with TensorFlow.js 3.21.0 CPU backend. Fixed postprocessing: Amplitude >= 0.475 and duration >= 0.1 seconds. Across the complete 16-file held-out set, all 16 reached F1 ≥ 0.75 and mean F1 was 0.916. The eight real recordings were guitar; an independent real-piano holdout has not yet been completed. How local transcription works

Audio transcription with practical limits

This converter recognizes note pitch, start time, duration and strength from short audio. It runs the Basic Pitch model locally after you click Convert, then removes very short and low-confidence detections before creating a Standard MIDI file.

MIDI stores note instructions rather than recorded sound. The result will use a piano preview and a fixed 120 BPM timing reference so real seconds are preserved. That number is not an estimate of the song tempo, and the output is not quantized.

Automatic transcription is an editable starting point. Clear attacks and one dominant instrument work best. Dense arrangements, room noise, reverb and overlapping harmonics can create missing or extra notes.

What affects transcription accuracy

No audio upload

Audio decoding, recognition and MIDI creation stay in this browser session.

Conservative notes

Short and low-confidence detections are removed to reduce noisy MIDI output.

Editable result

Open the generated notes in the existing piano-roll editor without uploading them.

Good first-version uses

Start with a clean musical idea

  • Capture a short piano phrase as editable MIDI.
  • Extract a clear solo-instrument melody for further arranging.
  • Create a rough note map that you can correct in the local editor.
Questions, answered

Limits of audio-to-MIDI recognition

Can this convert a complete song?

It accepts short files, but it is not designed to reconstruct dense full mixes, separate instruments, identify drums or restore the original sound.

Why does the MIDI sound different?

The original recording contains audio timbre and effects. MIDI contains note instructions, and this page previews those notes with a standard instrument sound.

Is 120 BPM the detected tempo?

No. It is a fixed MIDI timebase used to preserve each note’s position in seconds. The converter does not estimate song BPM.

What happens when no reliable notes are found?

The page reports that result and does not create an empty MIDI download.
